WESLEY ENSMINGER

Contemporary

My teaching style and the way I like to move draws mainly from Release Technique, Countertechnique and a strong emphasis on Improvisation. In my classes, Improvisation is a vital component because it allows each individual to discover their most authentic form of movement. However, I always make sure that I have a balance of both improvisation exercises and technique exercises because they are both equally important.

For the most part, my class is structured like most modern technique classes. A brief warm up, followed by multiple exercises geared towards specific tasks i.e. plies, todues, alignment of the spine, release and recover, isolation and recognition of specific regions of the body.  This will typically lead into a structured improvisation with the intent of tuning in to each dancer's bodies and incorporating the "techniques" just practiced.  Various traveling and strength exercises across the floor follow the improvisation exercises and the class will end in phrase-work.  Phrase-work is extremely important because it teaches one to soak in information quickly, learn structured material and then take individual liberties to break down the phrase and make the movement feel authentic to their own body.
